The Mercell Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) system facilitates the use of Microsoft Word documents for both importing content to create structured contracts and exporting contracts for external editing.

### Preparing Word Documents for Import

For successful import and structural integrity, your Word document must be correctly formatted:

- **Heading Levels are Essential:** To allow the system to correctly identify contract clauses and sections, **each title of a contract clause must have an associated heading level**.
- **Applying Heading Levels:** Use the **Styles ribbon** within Microsoft Word to format titles using built-in heading levels (e.g., Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3).
- **Structural Hierarchy:** The heading level defines the clause hierarchy:
  - **Heading Level 1** is the main clause.
  - **Heading Level 2** is a subsection.
  - **Heading Level 3** is a subsection of a subsection, and so on.

> **Note:** If Word styles are **not** used, the system treats every individual paragraph as a new item and does not apply logical headings. These must then be manually modified within the CLM system.

### Importing a New Contract

You can create a contract based entirely on a Word document:

1. Select **Import contract** from the **New** option in the top menu.
2. Complete the initial steps of contract creation (e.g., set the **Contract Type** and **Contract Template**).
3. Upload the Word document from the option **Contract document**.
